What's With the Weather??

A few weeks back there was a sound. An incredible sound. Those in Caelum Weyr heard it first and they were left with their ears ringing it was so sudden and loud. The sound echoed all around Pern and met itself coming and going in Telgar, who heard it as not so distant thunder. Then the tsunami's came. Huge waves across the southern continent. Caelum was completely buried in water. The dragons did their best but there were losses. The waves were big up along the northern continent, but no more than the large waves a good sized hurricane brought in. Waves they could handle. There was a lot of talking among the Harpers and the Lord Holders actually started communicating among each other via fire lizard. There was a sudden demand on dragons to fly the Lord Holders over their holdings to assure them that all was well.

Then the demands came in for the dragon riders to find out what was going on. A demand that was paid attention to , but was a little low on the priority list as threadfall always came first and the dragons came second to their riders. The weather was mild those weeks. Wonderful for early spring. And the sunsets were spectacular. When they could, the Weyrleaders and their riders were flying sweeps to see what had caused that sound. Many flying to the far north to see if it came from there. Still others to the far south. They knew they had to check Pern's oceans and that was next after they were sure that explosion had not come from their own continents. Then there was a line of clouds. The holders and riders took note of those clouds and secured everything for what looked like that last winter storm of the season.

How wrong they were. High Reaches Hold and Weyr were the first to see the actual snowfall. Then the winds picked up. Four days later, it hadn't let up and sounded even worse. The winds were far too strong for dragons to fly in, much less fire lizards. It was a total white-out. Weyrfolk could see their hands in front of their faces and that was about it if they ventured out into it.  The candidates felt trapped in their barracks. They weren't, but they felt like it.  And the eggs are hard. Ready to hatch any time now. And Gold Isilmeth is having fits with the snow blowing into the grounds.

Nabol, Torbay, Crom and as far east as Bitra and Benden were hit within the next two days. Fort was hit the day after the blizzard started in the Reaches. And for the first time ever, Southern Boll and Ista Island were seeing not only cold weather, but sleet and snow. Snow. Ista's queen has recently flown and has returned with the 'new' Weyrleader. The old renegade R'yn. Now how the heck did that happen??

Ponderosa is also getting some snow down south. Summer had just ended into early fall when winter came howling in. Stay tuned for more interesting weather. What does this mean for what's already happening? Stay tuned...
