There are three levels of GMs (Game
Master/Manager)
Apprentice GM
- These are responsible for generating role
play and assisting the other GMs in the role play that is within their topic and
when topics combine for a large story line (SL) or tiny plot (TP). They have no
voting right and no other 'powers' on the game. They are the assistants though
their opinions are valued and they are members of the Council of Pern RPG. The
character used for Apprentice GMs can be any character, no matter what the IC
rank is. Apprentice GMs can be GM on no more than two separate topics.
Journeyman GM
- These are responsible for
generating role play and working with their Apprentice GMs within topic as well
as when there are large events between two or more topics. The Journeyman is
allowed to vote and is a member of the Council of Pern RPG. Any character can be
used for the GM no matter what the IC rank is. Journeyman gm’s are allowed to gm only one topic and
apprentice gm 2 other topics.
Master GM
- These GMs are the Board of Director (BoD) members who are actually assisting
in the overall operation of the Game on the OOC level and are accountable to
Anne McCaffrey and her people. They oversee and ensure the smooth running of the
game itself, as well as the web pages associated with the game. Master GMs are
allowed to vote and are members of the Council of Pern RPG. A Master GM can
Veto any item in Council, at which point the item that has been vetoed goes
into a closed session discussion among the Master GMs before the final decision
is posted for the Council of Pern.
- Anyone who is being
presented in Council for a GM position must be prepared to give their real
life name to the staff of Pern RPG and the name of the character connected
with their gm'ship. The character can be an IC ranking character or a
character of little or no IC rank (example: A candidate who did not
impress but remains in the weyr as a beast handler)
- Voting
- Three (3) Aye
votes pass a new character into the game. If a Nay vote is issued, a 2/3
majority is needed after the reason(s) for the Nay are discussed in the
Staff forum..
- In all voting
procedures where a simple majority is used, the 2/3 GM majority rule
applies when a NAY is involved at which point the staff takes it under
closed discussion until a decision is reached.
- The gm should read
all notes posted in their subject to be aware of story lines and make sure
they are within the canon of Pern. They are to be aware of any game rule
issues and disputes among players. They should also make sure there is no
negativity posted other than what is in the storylines and role play
itself. OOC negativity should be removed from the post. OOC negativity is
defined as harsh, angry or sarcastic criticism towards other players,
accusations and so on. All OOC negativity is to be kept off the forum itself
and should remain in e-mail, IM, or discussed over on the staff forum.
- The gm’s
are encouraged to start new story lines often, preferably once a week.
This is at the discretion of the gm. Characters in your subject should be
encouraged to start their own stories as well. Whether this is a storyline
with a definite beginning, middle and end, or simply a post to get some
activity going within the subject that is open enough to move in any
direction.
- The gm’s are
responsible for participation in Council on a regular basis (daily
preferred but a minimum of three (3) times per week is required). Because
of matters such as player questions, queries from people not yet on the
game and new characters, the gm(s) should respond to such matters as often
as possible.
- The gm’s only have
jurisdiction in their own subject and should not assume or imply authority
anywhere else.
- Each GM (Journeyman
and Master) has only one vote.
- Disputes
- GMs are
responsible for negotiating between arguing players in their subject.
GMs should use the guidelines of the Charter, Game Rules and Policy to
make rulings. When the dispute is between a writer and a gm, or between
two gm’s, the gm(s) should seek an impartial gm to negotiate.
- When a good-faith
solution cannot be found for disputes, a player may be asked to leave a
subject. The staff recommends you use email. If the problem continues,
it should be brought before Council for a vote. Please Note: Only
Extreme differences should lead to the removal of a writer from that
topic.
- Proposed New Topics
must be presented to the Master GMs for a closed session vote first as the
game player base is looked at as well as the amount of role play within
the game itself. If the Masters approve the new topic, it is presented to
the full Council of Pern for a vote. The new topic may have two or more
apprentice GMs running it on a trial basis for approximately 60 days. At
this time, another vote is taken to decide if the new topic has been
successful. If the topic has been deemed successful, a Journeyman GM for
that topic is voted on among the current Apprentice GMs handling the new
topic. The topic can remain without a GM if there is an IC
Weyrleader/Weyrwoman as well as a WeyrlingMaster and Headwoman.
- Any GM who gives a
player access to the game’s ooc controls or the Staff Forum on this game,
the gm automatically forfeits their right to be a GM (of any rank for any
topic) on this game and is returned to player status. The player that
accepts or uses such controls will also forfeit their rights (as well as
any gm position they hold in other subjects), being returned to player
status. If a gm offers such control access to anyone, to avoid guilt by
association, the player (or other gm no matter what rank) should report
the violation and offer proof of such to the Council for action.
NOTE: If you cannot devote the time required to GM
or assist with the rp as outlined in the rules above, please do not apply. We need dedicated people who are
willing and have the enthusiasm and creativity to take on the OOC
responsibility of being a GM.
